My wife went to Sweden about 20 years ago, and she brought me back a "Sammi Knife" as a gift cuz I used to work with Alaska Native reindeer herders. It's exactly like your knife, except the sheath uses some exposed reindeer antler with carvings/scrimshaw instead of the wood you used. Your craftsmanship is excellent. I've dressed out at least a dozen caribou plus a moose, a brown bear and a couple of black bears. I wouldn't use it if it didn't work great for the job and fit my hand so nicely. I worry about my first finger slipping/choking up onto the blade and cutting myself but that hasn't happened (yet). It also holds an edge very well. Plus it's beautiful and it's authentic. And now I know it's called a "Puukko Knife." Thank you for sharing the culture with your great photography and skills.
@@EiraAimo They're made of Krupp carbon steel, which in my experience is wonderful for these types of blade. They're handmade as well, and for the most part, are rhombic cross section. Every single one I have purchased tapers to the tip in both thickness and width. They're also zero ground, which makes them extremely good slicers. (Just handle them with extreme care!). I absolutely love these knife blades. Puronvarsi is a small family owned business and the quality never ceases to amaze me. They're well worth the price.
@@brightargyle8950 Thanks a lot for thorough answer! There are lots of similar handmade blades you unfortunately cant compare side by side so its always bit guessing and exploring something new - which is not bad, part of the hobby. Not that any of those are bad blades, but what makes one brilliant.
I just made a puukko knife using a YP Taonta blade.I used hand cut stacked leather for the handle,as well as a brass bolster and handmade brass butt cap. Then I made a Sami style antler and leather sheath for it.I'd like to learn how to do the artwork on the antler.I used elk antler for my sheath. You did a nice job on the Sami style artwork.
As a Finnish born son I have not only my own Puukko Knife , but my fathers and my Grandfathers as well. they are all a durable and sturdy for use on the family farm, from cutting bales to dressing the cows when butchering.
Your birch betrayed you twice. Not a lot of figuring and a spot you needed to repair. Despite all that - you did a great repair and used the wood. Amazing knife and amazing build. Truly something to be proud of.
That was a wonderful ending to my Christmas day. I watched your whole process and I don't remember the last time I watched an entire youtube. Sign of the times with internet induced ADD or my own mental shortcoming; but fantastic work. You are an honorary Finn.
Excellent Video! Thank You Sir. Piece of advice from an old mechanic: When you mix your epoxy mix it on a piece of steel with a piece of steel. The paper you used here will absorb some of the aromatic solvents in the epoxy and throw the 2 part mixture off a bit which can and will affect long-term durability. The steel is easy to clean with a wire wheel or grinder/cup brush and is forever reusable. Great Channel BTW!
Very nice knife! Expecting an order tomorrow from brisa with the stuff to make a knife for the first time., the thread on the back of the tang is new to me but i like the idea and maybe will do the same, cause i forgot to order a backplate and don’t want to rely on glue alone.. Again , masterpiece maybe because of it’s relatively simplicity

What makes them so good? Genuinly learning here :)
